The K3B program was created as a feature-rich and easy to handle CD burning application. It consists of basicly three parts: The Projects, The Tools, and Content sensitive media actions.

With this application you can do the following:

  • Easily create Data CDs and DVDs
  • Easily create Audio and Video CDs from media
  • CD/DVD Video and Audio Ripping
  • MP3 (and other formats) to Audio CD
  • Add codecs to support formats such as MP3
  • Creating and blanking-out CDR-Ws
  • Writing existing iso images to CD or DVD with optional verification of the written data.
  • DVD copy (no video transcoding yet)

K3B consists of basicly three parts:

  1. The projects:
    Projects are created from the file menu and then filled with data to burn.
  2. The Tools:
    The tools menu offers different tools like CD copy or DVD formatting.
    #Context sensitive media actions:
    When clicking on the Icon representing a CD/DVD drive K3b will present it's contents and allow some further action. This is for example the way to rip audio CDs.

  • Computer ▸ More Applications ▸ Accessories section ▸ K3B.
  • From the command line: 'k3b &'

Basic Functionality

Basic Functionality

K3B can be used in many ways including creating CD or DVDs from image (.iso) files, creating CD or DVD data backup disks, and audio CDs.

Creating a CD/DVD from image (.iso) file

  1. Download (or acquire) an image fie (i.e. lifeboat.iso), then start K3B Burning software application
  2. After starting K3b, select Tools ▸ Burn CD Image (for CDs) or Burn DVD Image (for DVDs)
  3. Click on the 'Open File Dialog' icon ▸ Use the browser to locate your image (.iso) file.
  4. When located, click on the 'OK' button.
    • If the image is sound the checksum will return successful result.
    • If the image file has a problem (corrupted) you will see a message like "This seems not to be a usable image".
  5. Click on 'Start' to begin the burning process. You must have a system with appropriate hardware for CD burning and/or DVD burning.
  6. When completed, confirm that the CD has been created correctly.

Creating a Data CD/DVD from your system

  1. After starting K3b, select File ▸ New Project ▸ New Data CD Project or New Data DVD Project
  2. Two popular options for adding content:
    • Drag and drop folders from the browser (top-half of the window) to the project section (bottom-half of the window)
    • Using the browser, right click on desired folders and files and select 'Add to project'.
  3. Using the visual 'progress bar' at the bottom of the window, be sure to not exceed the media's maximum capacity:
    • CDROM - generally 700 MB
    • DVDROM - generally 4.4 GB
  4. When finished adding content, click on the 'burn' button.
  5. A burning dialog box will open, make changes as desired, then click on the burn/start button to begin burning a new project to your media. You must have a system with appropriate hardware for CD burning and/or DVD burning.
  6. When completed, confirm that the CD has been created correctly.

Creating an audio CD

  1. After starting K3b, select File ▸ New Project ▸ New Audio CD Project
  2. Two popular options for adding content:
    • Drag and drop folders from the browser (top-half of the window) to the project section (bottom-half of the window)
    • Using the browser, right click on desired folders and files and select 'Add to project'.
  3. Using the visual 'progress bar' at the bottom of the window, be sure to not exceed the media's maximum capacity
  4. When finished adding content, click on the 'burn' button.
    If the audio formats are unsupported, you will need to install codecs either by package (i.e. .rpm) or manually.
